Translucent golden-yellow to pale honey-colored Bytownite displays broad, glassy cleavage surfaces with a bright vitreous luster. The thin specimen allows light to pass readily through the feldspar, highlighting subtle internal fractures and variations in its warm coloration.
Bytownite is a calcium-rich member of the plagioclase feldspar series, compositionally intermediate between Labradorite and Anorthite. Material from the Lakeview area of southern Oregon is known for occurring in volcanic terrain.
