Calcite
Texas, USA
Dimensions: 3.4 x 2.8 × 2.5 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 150, included with specimen. Label also records “Collected by gift.”
An attractive pale champagne-yellow Calcite specimen displaying a translucent, blocky crystal formation with prominent cleavage surfaces and a soft vitreous to pearly luster. Its delicate cream and honey tones become more apparent where light passes through the crystal, revealing subtle internal fractures and layered structures. Stepped edges, intersecting cleavage planes, and naturally irregular surfaces give this specimen an appealing geometric appearance.
Calcite is a calcium carbonate mineral (CaCO₃) belonging to the trigonal crystal system and is particularly well known for its perfect rhombohedral cleavage and optical double refraction. It forms in a wide variety of geological environments, including sedimentary deposits, hydrothermal veins, and limestone cavities. Texas is home to numerous calcite occurrences associated with its extensive carbonate formations, making this vintage-labeled specimen a classic example of the state's mineral diversity.
