Diaspore Montejo de la Sierra, Community of Madrid, Spain Dimensions: 5.3 × 4.4 × 3.6 cm Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 138, included with specimen.
An impressive Diaspore specimen displaying an intricate arrangement of thick, bladed mineral formations in deep olive-brown, smoky gray, and bronze tones. Broad, reflective surfaces exhibit a pearly to vitreous luster, with prominent parallel striations, stepped cleavage, and overlapping layers that create a striking sculptural appearance. Golden-brown and rusty orange coloration follows fractures and crystal boundaries, contrasting with the darker interior. The specimen's substantial dimensions and complex intergrowth of bladed structures give it considerable visual interest from multiple angles.
Diaspore is an aluminum oxide hydroxide mineral (AlO(OH)) that commonly forms in aluminum-rich metamorphic rocks and hydrothermally altered environments. It is particularly recognized for its perfect cleavage, distinctive bladed crystal habit, and reflective surfaces. The Montejo de la Sierra locality in the Community of Madrid, Spain, is associated with metamorphic mineral occurrences, making this vintage-labeled specimen an interesting example of Spanish mineralogy and classic Diaspore formation.
