Freibergite (Silver-Rich Tetrahedrite)
Sunshine Mine, Coeur d’Alene District, Idaho
Ex. BURMINCO
Dimensions: 5.3 x 4.6 x 1.8 cm
Provenance: Accompanied by two vintage labels: an older BURMINCO (Monrovia, California) dealer label identifying the specimen as Freibergite (Argentian Tetrahedrite), Sunshine Mine, Coeur d’Alene District, Idaho, together with a later collection card cataloged as No. 352.
The Coeur d’Alene district has been an extraordinarily productive silver-lead-zinc mining region. Historically, tetrahedrite in the district was recognized very early as an indicator of richer silver ore.
Burminco, short for the Burnham Mineral Company, was founded by George Burnham in Monrovia, California, in 1946. For more than six decades, the company supplied mineral specimens to collectors, schools, universities, and scientific institutions, becoming a familiar name in American mineral collecting. Burminco material can still be found in older collections today, and surviving original labels provide a valuable link to the mid-20th-century mineral trade.
