Chromite
Selukwe (Shurugwi), Midlands Province, Zimbabwe (formerly Southern Rhodesia)
Dimensions: 5.5 × 2.6 × 3.2 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 132, included with specimen.
A substantial, naturally formed Chromite specimen exhibiting deep charcoal-black to dark olive-green coloration with a dense, granular texture. Its irregular surfaces display a subtle metallic to submetallic sheen, accented by scattered bronze-gold highlights and areas of earthy brown oxidation. Fine mineral grains and small angular cavities create a rugged, uneven surface, while faint greenish undertones lend additional depth to the otherwise dark specimen.
Chromite is an iron chromium oxide mineral (FeCr₂O₄) and the principal commercial ore of chromium, an essential element used in stainless steel and other industrial alloys. It commonly occurs in chromium-rich ultramafic rocks and associated mineral deposits. The Selukwe district, now known as Shurugwi, is situated along Zimbabwe's Great Dyke, a major layered igneous intrusion renowned for its extensive chromite deposits. This vintage-labeled specimen represents an important mineral from one of southern Africa's historically significant chromium-producing regions.
