“Algae jasper” is an older descriptive name used for stromatolitic jasper associated with Minnesota's Precambrian iron formations. These rocks preserve structures produced by ancient microbial communities, traditionally referred to as algae, which formed layered mats and mound-like stromatolites in shallow Precambrian waters.
