Several well-developed crystals rise prominently from the contrasting olive-tan matrix, displaying sharp geometric faces and a bright, nearly metallic vitreous luster under direct illumination.
Melanite is an unusual variety of andradite distinguished by titanium incorporated into its chemistry, producing colors ranging from very dark brown to essentially jet black. California is a documented source of melanite, including several occurrences in San Benito County noted for producing distinct black crystals.
