Butte, Silver Bow County, Montana, USA
Dimensions: 3.5 × 2.8 × 2.0 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 120, included with specimen.
A richly colored Cuprite specimen from the historic Butte mining district of Montana, featuring deep reddish-brown to nearly black mineralization accented by vibrant green and turquoise-blue secondary copper minerals. The specimen displays irregular, angular surfaces with a subtle metallic to submetallic sheen, while vivid green coatings follow fractures, crevices, and exposed edges. Scattered rusty orange highlights add further contrast to the dark copper-rich material.
Cuprite is a copper oxide mineral (Cu₂O) that commonly develops in the oxidized zones of copper deposits. Its characteristic deep red coloration can appear nearly black in massive specimens, while associated green copper minerals, such as Malachite, often form through subsequent weathering processes. Butte, Montana, is one of North America's most historically significant copper-mining districts, celebrated for its exceptionally diverse copper mineral assemblages and extensive mineralogical history.
