Spurrite
Spurrite skarn lens, South Sister Peak, Tres Hermanas Mining District, Tres Hermanas Mountains, Luna Co, New Mexico, USA
Dimensions: 4.8 x 3.2 x 1.9 cm
Provenance: Older collection specimen; original catalog label No. 254 included. Original label records Luna County, New Mexico.
An older New Mexico Spurrite specimen showing pale lavender-gray to smoky gray massive Spurrite beneath an extensive coating of snowy white to pale cream alteration products. Portions of the underlying Spurrite remain exposed with a smooth, somewhat vitreous to resinous appearance, contrasting strongly with the fine-grained white surface material. Classic material from the unusual contact-metamorphic Spurrite occurrence in the Tres Hermanas Mountains.
New Mexico Bureau of Mines literature describes the Luna County occurrence specifically at South Sister Peak, where Spurrite occurs as a massive, mostly purple band formed from a limestone xenolith in quartz monzonite. The heavy white coating is expected for this material. The New Mexico Bureau of Mines notes that the Spurrite from this deposit quickly develops a white calcium-carbonate coating on weathering. It is intentionally left and not cleaned off!
