An attractive Franklinite specimen featuring an intergrown mass of jet-black to dark steel-gray crystals with a combination of metallic to submetallic luster. The specimen displays prominent angular crystal faces, irregular stepped surfaces, and areas of bright reflective luster. Small patches of contrasting cream-white mineral material occur between the dark crystals, accentuating their blocky structure and creating visual contrast throughout the specimen.
Franklinite is a zinc-iron oxide mineral belonging to the spinel group, with the chemical formula ZnFe₂O₄. It is especially associated with the historic zinc deposits of Franklin, New Jersey, one of the world's most celebrated mineral localities. The Franklin Mining District is internationally recognized for its exceptional mineral diversity, including numerous rare species and fluorescent minerals. Franklinite was an important zinc ore in the district and remains a classic mineral for collectors of New Jersey specimens and historic American mining localities.
