Smithsonite
Mapimí, Durango, Mexico
Dimensions: 4.2 × 3.4 × 2.3 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 161, identifying the specimen as Smithsonite from Mapimí, Durango, Mexico. Label included with specimen.
An interesting Smithsonite specimen displaying a thick, dark brown to charcoal-gray surface with a finely textured, matte appearance. The broad exterior features gently rounded contours and subtle variations in surface texture, contrasting with exposed areas of translucent honey-yellow to olive-brown mineralization. These exposed sections exhibit a vitreous to resinous luster, with irregular fractured surfaces that reveal the specimen's internal structure. Small areas of reddish-brown iron staining add further color variation.
Smithsonite is a zinc carbonate mineral, ZnCO₃, that commonly forms through the oxidation and alteration of zinc-bearing ore deposits. It occurs in a variety of colors and habits, including massive, crystalline, and botryoidal formations. The Mapimí region of Durango, Mexico, is internationally recognized for its historic mineral deposits, particularly those associated with the Ojuela mining district. This vintage-labeled specimen offers an attractive example of secondary zinc mineralization from one of Mexico's classic mineral-producing regions.
