Margarodite (Muscovite–Paragonite Mica)– Connecticut
Margarodite (Muscovite–Paragonite Mica)– Connecticut
Margarodite (Muscovite–Paragonite Mica)
Connecticut
Dimensions: 5.5 × 4.0 × 2.1 cm
Provenance: Older collection specimen; original catalog label No. 246 included.
Collector Note: Margarodite is no longer considered a valid mineral species. Connecticut material historically sold under that name is now regarded as mica in the muscovite–paragonite series.
This is a classic old Connecticut mineral name, and the specimen is a great example of why it was called Margarodite: large silvery to smoky-gray pearly mica plates forming foliated and locally fan-like aggregates. The broad sheets have an unusually bright pearlescent luster and pronounced “feathered” texture. Historical Connecticut literature describes Margarodite exactly this way—pale yellow through smoky brown-gray, foliated/radiating, pearlier and more brittle than ordinary muscovite.
