Iridescent Anthracite “Peacock Coal”
Pottsville, Pennsylvania
Dimensions: 7.3 x 1.8 x 0.5 cm

Comes with old label.

A remarkably colorful vintage example of iridescent anthracite, traditionally known as “Peacock Coal,” from Pottsville, Pennsylvania. The elongated piece retains broad reflective surfaces that shift through saturated blue, violet, bronze, gold, and subtle rose under direct light, creating a striking contrast against the coal's otherwise deep black body.

Peacock coal is not a distinct mineral species or coal rank, but a descriptive name for anthracite displaying an iridescent surface effect associated with oxidation. Pennsylvania's historic anthracite fields are particularly well known for examples of this phenomenon, making the Pottsville provenance especially appropriate.
