Almandine Garnet (Massive)
Gaffney, Cherokee County, South Carolina, USA
Dimensions: 5.1 × 5.1 × 3.5 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 211, included with specimen.
A substantial specimen of massive Almandine Garnet displaying deep reddish-brown, burgundy, and nearly black coloration. One broad surface reveals a dense, fine-grained structure with subtle reddish-purple undertones, intersecting fractures, and scattered pale mineral inclusions. The opposite side features a rugged, naturally weathered exterior with rusty orange-brown iron staining, creating an interesting contrast between the garnet-rich interior and its surrounding material.
Almandine is an iron aluminum silicate and one of the most widespread members of the garnet group. It commonly forms in metamorphic rocks, particularly schists and gneisses, where elevated temperatures and pressures promote garnet crystallization. South Carolina has a long history of garnet occurrences within its metamorphic rock formations, and the Gaffney area lies within the mineral-rich Piedmont region. This vintage specimen offers an interesting example of massive Almandine from the southeastern United States.
