Crazy lace agate is a patterned variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz, distinguished by its complex, tightly interwoven bands. Its characteristic patterns develop through successive episodes of silica deposition, with trace minerals contributing to the stone's varied coloration. Iron-bearing compounds are responsible for many of the warm red, orange, and brown tones.
