Cyrtolite, 5.5% Hafnium
Bedford, New York
Dimensions: 2.8 x 1.8 x 1.5 cm
An old-time specimen of cyrtolite from the historic Bedford pegmatite district of Westchester County, New York. Cyrtolite is an altered, metamict variety of zircon associated with uranium-, thorium-, and rare-element-bearing pegmatites. This example forms a dense reddish-brown to nearly black aggregate with a subtly resinous luster and scattered yellow alteration products across the surface.
Of particular interest is the original collection label, which records the material as containing 5.5% hafnium. Bedford cyrtolite has been known to mineralogists since the early twentieth century, making this an appealing historical locality specimen as well as an unusual example of hafnium-rich zircon.
