Native Sulfur
Racalmuto, Agrigento Province, Sicily, Italy
Dimensions: 6.2 x 3.5 x 2.5 cm
A vibrant vintage Native Sulfur specimen from Racalmuto, Sicily, displaying the intense lemon-yellow coloration for which classic Sicilian sulfur is famous. The specimen consists of numerous intergrown translucent sulfur crystals, including larger blocky to modified dipyramidal forms surrounded by smaller crystalline growth.
Racalmuto is one of the historic sulfur-producing localities of Sicily's Agrigento Province. The deposits occur within the region's Messinian evaporite sequence, where sulfur crystallized alongside minerals including calcite, aragonite, celestine and gypsum. Racalmuto became particularly well known among collectors for its bright, lustrous and sometimes remarkably transparent sulfur crystals.
