A fascinating vintage specimen of petrified fern wood from Oregon, displaying an intricate internal structure beautifully exposed across its cut face. Warm golden-brown, tan and smoky gray silicified material surrounds countless small elongated, oval and swirling structures, creating an unusually complex organic pattern across the specimen.
Unlike ordinary petrified wood, which often displays familiar growth rings and linear grain, fern-type fossil material can preserve the complex arrangement of vascular tissues within the original plant. Here, those structures appear as densely packed curved, elongated and eye-like patterns, giving the specimen an almost abstract appearance when viewed in cross-section. The silica-rich replacement also produces a subtle sparkle across the cut surface under direct light.
The specimen retains its original vintage collection number 503 and handwritten identification of “Fern Wood — Oregon.”
