The specimen retains remarkably wood-like external textures, including longitudinal grain and fibrous-looking structure, while the broken end exposes concentric internal features reminiscent of the original growth structure.
North Dakota is well known for fossil wood, particularly from Paleocene-age deposits in the western part of the state. Ancient forests grew across warm, swampy floodplains before fallen wood was buried and gradually mineralized by groundwater. North Dakota petrified wood ranges from strongly silicified material to specimens that retain partially coalified characteristics, and individual pieces can preserve bark, knots, growth rings and even fine cellular structure.
