A vintage polished specimen of petrified wood collected from the Newport, Oregon coast, historically labeled “Beach Wood.” The polished face reveals beautifully preserved wood structure in warm honey, caramel, cream and brown tones, with pronounced longitudinal grain and translucent areas of silicification.
Petrified wood is well documented along the central Oregon coast, where erosion and ocean action release fossilized and silicified wood from older deposits and tumble fragments onto the beaches. Newport-area petrified wood can preserve remarkably distinct grain and may become partially agatized, producing the glossy, translucent appearance visible in this specimen.
