Rutile Kragerø, Telemark, Norway Dimensions: 3.4 × 3.4 × 2.5 cm Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 136a, included with specimen. The label also identifies Kragerø, Telemark, Norway, as the locality.
A substantial, dark metallic Rutile specimen displaying a combination of deep charcoal-black coloration, steel-gray reflections, and a striking submetallic to metallic luster. The specimen features irregular, intergrown crystalline masses with prominent angular surfaces, stepped fractures, and areas of fine parallel striations. Portions of the surface exhibit a slightly fibrous or layered texture, while scattered patches of warm brown mineral staining provide subtle contrast against the darker crystalline material. Its rugged formation and varied surface textures create an appealing example of massive crystalline Rutile.
Rutile is a titanium dioxide mineral (TiO₂) that crystallizes in the tetragonal system and is recognized for its high refractive index, distinctive crystal habits, and colors ranging from reddish brown to nearly black. The Kragerø area of Telemark, Norway, is a classic Scandinavian mineral locality, particularly noted for its titanium-bearing minerals and complex metamorphic geology. This vintage-labeled specimen represents the historic mineral collecting heritage of southern Norway.
