Dioptase
Tiger, Mammoth–St. Anthony Mining District, Pinal County, Arizona, USA
Dimensions: 4.3 × 2.8 × 2.1 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 215, included with specimen.
A striking Dioptase specimen featuring brilliant emerald-green to deep turquoise-green crystals scattered across a contrasting earthy brown and tan matrix. Dense clusters of slender, lustrous crystals fill shallow cavities and extend across the specimen's surface, forming intricate radiating and intergrown arrangements. The vivid coloration and sparkling crystal faces create an exceptional contrast against the rugged, iron-stained host rock.
Dioptase is a relatively uncommon copper silicate mineral prized for its intensely saturated green color and brilliant vitreous luster. The historic Tiger locality, within Arizona's Mammoth–St. Anthony Mining District in Pinal County, is known for its diverse secondary copper minerals. Dioptase forms in the oxidized zones of copper deposits, where copper-bearing solutions interact with silica-rich environments. This vintage-labeled specimen offers an attractive example of Arizona's mineralogical heritage, combining vivid color, delicate crystal development, and historic locality provenance.
