Hedenbergite is the iron-rich member of the diopside–hedenbergite pyroxene series, well documented from the Graphic Mine and the broader Magdalena district. The Graphic-Waldo deposit is a zinc-lead replacement/skarn system, where mineralizing fluids altered limestone adjacent to intrusive rocks.
The Graphic and Waldo workings became essentially parts of the same mining operation. The Graphic was originally staked in 1866, while the Waldo tunnel was driven in 1906 to reach deeper ore; because the two exploited the same ore body, the combined workings became known as the Graphic-Waldo Mine.
For a collector, this is less about flashy individual crystals and more about mineralogy and locality: a representative piece of iron-rich skarn material from one of New Mexico's historic lead-zinc districts, with the hedenbergite's dark coloration and crystalline texture clearly visible.
