The crystal-rich surface includes larger individual crystals surrounded by smaller sparkling growth, contrasting beautifully against brown, gray and rusty orange areas of the underlying silica-rich rock.
Flint Ridge is one of Ohio's most famous geological localities and is particularly renowned for its colorful Vanport Flint. Natural cavities within the flint can become lined with larger quartz crystals, producing attractive specimens combining cryptocrystalline flint with well-developed macrocrystalline quartz.
