A vintage petrified wood specimen from Many, Sabine Parish, Louisiana, retaining remarkably natural wood-like texture and longitudinal grain. Pale cream, tan and subtle brown coloration emphasizes the fibrous structure, giving the specimen an appearance surprisingly close to weathered wood despite its fossilized state.
Louisiana is well known for silicified fossil wood, particularly in the western and central portions of the state. Specimens can preserve fine anatomical details of the original plant as silica-bearing groundwater gradually mineralizes the buried wood. The pronounced grain preserved in this piece makes it an especially interesting example of fossil wood preservation.
