A natural Iris Agate slice displaying brilliant rainbow colors when illuminated with transmitted light. At first glance, the agate may appear translucent white, cream, honey, or golden-orange, but when held in front of a strong light source, extremely fine layers within the chalcedony reveal vivid bands of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet.
Unlike the color play seen in minerals such as opal or labradorite, the rainbow effect in Iris Agate is produced by diffraction of light through exceptionally fine, closely spaced bands of chalcedony. When the spacing of these microscopic layers approaches the wavelengths of visible light, the agate acts somewhat like a natural diffraction grating, separating transmitted white light into spectral colors.
