Petrified Wood
Oregon, USA
Dimensions: 4.7 × 3.6 × 1.8 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 115, included with specimen.
An attractive piece of Oregon petrified wood displaying a beautiful combination of smoky chocolate-brown, honey-gold, and warm amber coloration. The specimen features smooth, naturally fractured surfaces with a glossy, almost glasslike luster and distinctive conchoidal fracture patterns. Rich golden-yellow areas transition into deep translucent brown, while a thin dark band separates the silicified interior from a pale, weathered outer rind. Subtle internal banding and variations in translucency add visual depth to this classic fossil wood specimen.
Petrified wood forms when mineral-rich groundwater gradually replaces or fills the original woody material with silica, preserving portions of its structure over geological time. Oregon is particularly well known for its abundant petrified wood deposits, which occur in several regions associated with ancient forests and volcanic activity. The specimen's warm coloration and contrasting silica-rich layers make it an appealing example of the state's fossil heritage.
