Magnetite (Massive)
Gaffney, Cherokee County, South Carolina, USA
Dimensions: 3.9 × 2.8 × 2.6 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 130, included with specimen.
A substantial massive Magnetite specimen displaying dark charcoal-gray to nearly black coloration, with contrasting rusty brown and ochre iron-oxide staining across its rugged surfaces. The specimen features an irregular, angular form with a dense, fine-grained texture. Areas of darker, relatively smooth mineralization contrast with the rougher, earthy brown surfaces, highlighting the natural weathering and oxidation of this iron-rich material.
Magnetite is an iron oxide mineral with the chemical formula Fe₃O₄ and is best known for its strong magnetic properties. An important iron ore mineral, it occurs in a variety of geological environments, including igneous, metamorphic, and hydrothermal deposits. The Gaffney area of Cherokee County, South Carolina, lies within a region with a history of iron mineralization and mining, making this vintage-labeled specimen an interesting example of southeastern United States mineralogy.
