A substantial matrix specimen featuring dense areas of black to very dark greenish-black Babingtonite with a bright vitreous luster. One particularly attractive cavity contains numerous small, well-formed Babingtonite crystals surrounding and scattered across a contrasting cluster of white to colorless Calcite crystals. Additional Babingtonite occurs throughout the gray, fine-grained matrix, with minor rusty iron staining adding warm accents.
Babingtonite is an iron-bearing calcium silicate and is particularly significant in Massachusetts, where it is the official state mineral. The historic Winchester Highlands occurrence produced Babingtonite from veins cutting granodiorite and associated pegmatite, commonly accompanied by minerals including Prehnite and Epidote. The Winchester Highlands occurrence was already being described in the mineralogical literature by the early 20th century.
