A classic Magnet Cove specimen featuring numerous black to greenish-black, elongated prismatic Aegirine crystals embedded throughout a contrasting white to cream-colored matrix. Several of the larger crystals display strong longitudinal striations and a bright vitreous luster, while smaller needles and crystal sections are scattered throughout the specimen. Minor rusty-yellow iron staining adds warm accents to the pale matrix.
Aegirine is a sodium-iron pyroxene characteristic of alkaline igneous environments. Acmite is an older synonym/name historically used for Aegirine, particularly for sharply pointed or well-developed crystals. Magnet Cove is a classic American Aegirine locality, where the mineral occurs in the unusual alkaline igneous complex and its nepheline-syenite pegmatites.
