Mariposite Slab
Mariposa County, California, USA
Dimensions: 6.2 x 3.1 x 1.0 cm

Mariposite is a chromium-rich variety of the mica mineral muscovite, typically found intergrown with quartz in metamorphic rocks. It was first described from California's Mariposa County—where it earned its name—and has long been associated with the historic Mother Lode gold belt. Although not a mineral species itself, mariposite is prized by collectors and lapidary enthusiasts for its distinctive green coloration, produced by traces of chromium, and for the scenic patterns created by its natural mineral assemblage.
