Corundum Burgess Mine, New Carlow, Hastings County, Ontario, Canada Dimensions: 5.4 × 4.0 × 3.1 cm Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 125, included with specimen.
A distinctive Corundum specimen featuring a substantial, dark gray to bronze-brown crystal embedded in a contrasting salmon-pink, coarse-grained matrix. The prominent crystal displays broad, irregular faces with a silvery to submetallic sheen, subtle growth textures, and weathered surfaces. Scattered dark greenish-black mineral inclusions and patches of associated material extend throughout the surrounding matrix, adding visual contrast and highlighting the specimen's complex mineral assemblage. The exposed crystal stands prominently above the matrix, giving this piece an attractive three-dimensional appearance.
Corundum is an aluminum oxide mineral (Al₂O₃) best known for its exceptional hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, surpassed among natural minerals only by diamond. While transparent gem-quality varieties are known as ruby and sapphire, opaque corundum crystals are equally important to collectors for their distinctive crystal habits and geological associations. The Burgess Mine locality near New Carlow, Ontario, is a historic Canadian mineral occurrence associated with corundum-bearing metamorphic rocks. This vintage-labeled specimen offers an appealing example of Canadian corundum mineralization and the region's longstanding mineral collecting history.
