Samarskite-(Y)
Locality: Texas Creek, Fremont County, Colorado
Dimensions: 5 x 2.2 x 1.7 cm
A striking and unusually well-formed specimen of samarskite-(Y) displaying the species' characteristic pitch-black coloration and submetallic luster. The crystal exhibits a sharply defined wedge-shaped habit with broad crystal faces that reflect light beautifully, revealing intricate growth textures and natural striations across the surface. The highly lustrous faces contrast dramatically with the deep black color, producing an appearance reminiscent of polished obsidian while retaining the complex surface character expected of a natural crystal.
The specimen is complete and sculptural, with multiple well-developed faces converging to form an elegant, elongated termination. Fine growth markings and subtle surface textures provide additional visual interest under magnification, while the crystal's robust form and excellent preservation make it an attractive representative example of this rare-earth-bearing oxide mineral.
Samarskite has long been prized by collectors for its historical significance and association with rare-earth and uranium-bearing pegmatites. Well-formed crystals are considerably less common than massive material, and specimens displaying such a distinct crystal habit are especially desirable.
