This striking vintage hourglass selenite crystal originates from western Oklahoma and is accompanied by its original collection label (Catalog No. 510). The specimen features a large, translucent selenite crystal with a dramatic chocolate-brown hourglass-shaped inclusion visible through its interior.
Hourglass selenite is an unusual variety of gypsum famous for its occurrence at Oklahoma's Great Salt Plains. As the selenite crystals grow beneath the salt flats, grains of sand, silt, and clay become selectively incorporated into portions of the growing crystal. Rather than being distributed evenly, these sediment particles form the distinctive hourglass-shaped internal pattern for which the crystals are named.
