Fine, parallel mineral fibers run throughout the stone, producing luminous bands of light that shift across the surface as the piece is viewed from different angles.
Although commonly sold under the name selenite, this material is more accurately known as satin spar, a fibrous variety of gypsum. Its parallel crystal fibers are responsible for the beautiful optical effect known as chatoyancy.
