Ludlamite with Vivianite, Fairfieldite & Triphylite
Palermo No. 1 Mine, North Groton, New Hampshire, USA
Dimensions: 4.4 x 3.5 x 2.2 cm
Few American localities have earned the reputation of the Palermo No. 1 Mine. For generations it has been recognized as one of the country's premier pegmatite localities, producing an extraordinary diversity of rare phosphate minerals that continue to captivate collectors today.
This specimen features sparkling pale green ludlamite crystals intergrown with white fairfieldite and triphylite, while contrasting patches of deep blue-black vivianite add striking visual depth across the matrix. Under magnification, the specimen reveals a fascinating landscape of translucent crystal faces, silky phosphate aggregates, and dark iron-rich minerals that reward close study.
Ludlamite is an uncommon hydrated iron phosphate prized for its vitreous luster and delicate green color. Vivianite is equally celebrated for its remarkable tendency to darken from pale green to rich blue as it oxidizes over time. Fairfieldite and Triphylite are classic Palermo phosphates that reflect the mine's exceptionally complex mineral chemistry, making multi-species specimens like this especially appealing to collectors of New England minerals.
With four identified phosphate species from one of America's most famous pegmatites, this specimen is both an attractive display piece and an excellent representative of the remarkable mineral diversity that made the Palermo No. 1 Mine legendary among collectors.
