Selenite is a transparent to translucent variety of gypsum (CaSO₄·2H₂O) known for its distinctive fibrous structure. Light travels along these parallel fibers, creating a smooth, satin-like glow across the surface. The result is a gentle internal shimmer that appears almost illuminated from within.

Carved hearts such as these are known as satin spar gypsum. Satin spar has tightly packed, parallel fibers. When polished, light travels along those fibers and creates that silky, moving sheen. Carved into a timeless heart shape, this piece highlights the natural striations and flowing structure that make selenite so visually striking.
