An olivine specimen from the historic ultramafic deposits surrounding Franklin in western North Carolina. Pale yellow-green to gray-green granular olivine occurs throughout the specimen, accompanied by pearly pale alteration minerals and scattered dark accessory grains. The specimen nicely demonstrates the partial alteration of olivine-rich dunite to serpentine-group minerals characteristic of many western North Carolina olivine deposits.
North Carolina has historically been one of the country's major sources of industrial olivine, occurring in isolated dunite and peridotite bodies throughout the Blue Ridge.
