An uncommon and historically recognized variety of muscovite, alurgite is distinguished by manganese within its crystal structure.California alurgite is particularly associated with San Bernardino County. Material from an occurrence in Cajon Pass was formally investigated by mineralogist Robert W. Webb in 1939, where alurgite was documented in quartz-mica schist associated with the manganese mineral piemontite.
This specimen retains its original older collection label, identifying it simply as Alurgite, San Bernardino Co., Cal., along with catalog number 343.
