Rhodocrosite (Massive)
Alma, Park County, Colorado, USA
Dimensions: 4.2 × 3.7 × 2.3 cm
Provenance: Original vintage collection label, catalog no. 160, identifying the specimen as Rhodochrosite from Alma, California (inaccurate attribution). Label included with specimen.
A lovely massive Rhodochrosite specimen displaying warm rose-pink to salmon-pink coloration, interspersed with creamy white and pale blush mineralization. The specimen features a dense, granular crystalline texture with subtle variations in color throughout its irregular surfaces. Small areas of translucency and a soft, sugary sparkle are visible along the fractured edges, while the natural white mottling creates an attractive contrast against the richer pink areas.
Rhodochrosite is a manganese carbonate mineral, MnCO₃, recognized for its distinctive pink to red coloration. It forms in hydrothermal mineral deposits and may occur as well-developed rhombohedral crystals, banded aggregates, or massive crystalline material. The Alma mining district of Colorado is internationally celebrated for its rhodochrosite occurrences, particularly the exceptionally vivid red crystals historically recovered from the Sweet Home Mine. Massive pink material represents another expression of this colorful manganese mineral.
