Thulite
Kirsten, Norway
Dimensions: 6.9 x 2.2 x 2.2 cm
This specimen is composed predominantly of dense, massive thulite, displaying mottled shades of dusty rose, salmon pink, burgundy and reddish-purple with contrasting cream to pale greenish matrix material.
Rather than showing isolated crystals, the thulite occurs as fine-grained crystalline masses and irregular patches throughout the matrix, giving the specimen a richly textured, almost marbled appearance. This massive habit is quite typical of classic Norwegian thulite. Thulite's coloration results from manganese incorporated into the zoisite structure.
Norway is particularly significant for thulite: the mineral variety was first recognized in Norway in the early 19th century, and the country remains famous for several important deposits.
