Wilkeite (Ellestadite) in Calcite
Crestmore Quarries, Crestmore, Jurupa Valley, Riverside Co, California, USA
Dimensions: 4.4 × 3.7 × 1.7 cm
Provenance: Burminco specimen with original Burminco label, plus older collection label No. 272.
An older specimen of the classic material historically known as Wilkeite, occurring as pale yellow-green to cream granular crystalline material intimately associated with sparkling white to colorless Calcite. The specimen has a sugary crystalline texture with subtle greenish-yellow coloration throughout and a thin white calcite vein crossing the matrix.
Wilkeite was originally described from the Crestmore quarries in 1914, making Crestmore its type locality. The name was later discredited as a distinct mineral species; unanalyzed Crestmore specimens historically labeled Wilkeite are now best regarded as Ellestadite-group material, with much of the old Crestmore material considered Hydroxylellestadite.
