Anglesite, Galena- Mammoth-Saint Anthony Mine, Arizona
Anglesite, Galena
Mammoth-Saint Anthony Mine, St. Anthony deposit, Tiger, Mammoth Mining District, Pinal County, Arizona, USA
Dimensions: 4.8 × 3.0 × 2.7 cm
Provenance: Older collection specimen; original catalog label No. 305 included.
Silvery-gray Galena occurs throughout a pale quartz-rich matrix, with portions altered to cream, yellow, and gray secondary lead mineralization. Metallic Galena remains visible beneath and between the alteration products, creating an excellent example of the transition from primary sulfide mineralization to secondary Anglesite.
Anglesite is a lead sulfate mineral commonly produced through oxidation of Galena. The historic Mammoth-Saint Anthony Mine at Tiger is especially noted for its exceptionally diverse suite of secondary lead minerals formed through alteration of the original ore body.
