White to nearly colorless Hanksite forms a stout, well-developed crystal with a softly frosted surface and subtle vitreous luster. The crystal retains distinct geometric faces and termination, with areas of greater translucency visible beneath the naturally etched exterior.
Hanksite is an unusual sulfate-carbonate mineral containing sodium and potassium and is characteristic of highly saline evaporite environments. Searles Lake is the type locality for Hanksite and is world-famous for producing distinctive crystals of the species.
